Down To Earth

Many of you already know I work alongside Kelly Paulson of Wild {Whim} Photography on many different types of beautiful shoots. Recently, Marzee Social Events and Love Child collaborated with Kelly to create a perfect outdoor wedding shoot at Lake Cachuma in the Santa Ynez valley. The decorations and set up from Marzee Social are so perfect for outdoor, nature loving couples. Everything was so unique and detailed.I wanted every piece of furniture and accessory from the shoot. The wardrobe and jewelry were provided by Love Child. The unique pieces from feathers in the brides hair to the gorgeous rings were all so appropriate and dreamy for this theme. Light dainty feminine pieces with bold statements. Love Child had all the pieces us ladies daydream over.

Meet our beautiful models, Mary and Steve. Both of them were loads of fun to work on. Easy going, chill people who didnt mind having me work on them from the trunk of my car. We gotta do what we gotta do, I know may of you stylists have awesome stories of where youve gotten your models ready.

This shoot was amazing, from the scenic drive up there to the beautiful surroundings of our location. I was happy to be a part of this whole collaboration.Check out Marzee Social Events and see what they can do for your next event. If youre a jewelry lover, gypsy or love to sport the bohemian style then you need to know about Love Child. Check them out of Facebook and book an appointment for some feather goodness.

Sexy Shots

I love shower shots, the "wet" look always looks sexy to me. When applying makeup for models that will be using a shower I apply a thin layer of vaseline onto their skin after I apply waterproof makeup. This allows the water to bead on the skin giving it a great wet look. These photos taken by Wild {Whim} Photography were fun to create. The shower was a beautiful black tile walk-in, so beautiful. The model is absolutely gorgeous and knows how to keep her husband happy!

Sexy Australian Girl

Today I got a visit from Susan also known as @KungFuPussy. She's my awesome world traveling Australian. Shes a blast to be around, full of energy and color. I wanted to doll her up in a completely different light than she or anyone else is used to seeing her. We took it back to the 1930s for her hairstyle. A nice finger wave with a splash of glitter and gems. We played around with my wardrobe which consisted of a few corsets and a vintage nightgown robe. Added some of my signature silver accessories and we were ready to have fun. Im so glad she was willing to be my model for this look, thank you pretty girl!!

Take a look at Susans website for awesome stories, handmade Origami cranes, photos and videos of our process today!

Susan, I read the desription that your sunglasses banged up the brows...they still look like they held up a bit, my favorite part is your ending! CLASSIC Susan!

You Call This Work?

Lets face it ladies (and gents), having a beauty session perks up our self esteem and if we are having a bad day/week/month then going in and tailoring up our appearance always makes us feel better inside too. Psychologists, Bartenders and Cosmetologists share a very special bond, our clients confide in us and share their lives with us and whats on their minds. I hear it all the time, with great pleasure, that a beauty session with me doubles as therapy and insight. Truth is, I feel the same about my clients. I share parts of my life and experiences with them as well and in doing so we form a great bond and we learn to understand each other better.
I may be the one giving the beauty session but sometimes when Im done with my client I get such a sense of enlightenment. I love all the lives that sit in my chair. Each one of them plays a part in my life and I just hope to share a little part in theirs.

Todays appointment has me in such a different mindset. Times are changing and womens roles in society are too. Im not just talking about careers Im talking about life choices.Meeting and talking to other women who have the same beliefs, (not just ordinary beliefs but the ones we dont talk about in public) makes me realize just how much the game has changed. Theres a lot of beauty in that alone. I feel inspired and more deliberate with my actions. Your life is yours and if any of you are going through a hard time then remember that this too shall pass. Your feelings and life choices, beliefs and values are yours, no one can take that from you and hopefully no one will try to sway you otherwise. Live YOUR life, however YOU want it to be. Pressures from society can stall you but stay strong and remember who you are.

much Love and Beauty!

2011-2012 Fall Winter Makeup Trends

Many of us are wondering what type of makeup to wear for the upcoming season, seems once again everything is recycled...

There are so many different styles that in all honesty, you cant go wrong with whatever you choose to sport.

Designers like Gucci, Giles, Miu Miu, YSL and Ralph Lauren, to name a few, went with the bold lips. Bright colors, bold and full of sass! Im glad to see bright colors on the runway, especially purple, I have sported purple lips for a while now. To those that thought the color was a bit much I say Stop being a trend follower and start being a trend setter! Aside from purple lips, bright colors like pink and orange are loads of fun too. Light on the eyes, heavy on the lips.

Brows made a statement in some of the runway shows like for Oscar de la Renta, Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander Wang, Balmain and many more. Natural looking brows, boyish almost. Thick, bold and expressive. Channeling Brook Shields, Jennifer Connely and Audrey Hepburn.

My favorite part of applying makeup is for the Eyes. This year we are seeing a comeback (was it ever really gone?) of liquid eyeliner, metallic shadows and smokey eyes. Designers such as Dolce & Gabbana, Stella McCartney, Gianfranco Ferre, Louis Vuitton, Carolina Herrera and many many many more really played up the eyes. Heavy lashes, colorful lids and bold liner. This is exactly the reason I love doing makeup.

In my humble opinion when you put all these trends together you get....

the 80s!!!

For many of us that are looking to create a buzz without going broke trying to afford all the fashion, we can incorporate style, which in my opinion goes further than whats hot in fashion at the moment.

If you have some free time and cant afford a makeup artist, get out all your funky makeup and start playing around. Nothing screams beauty to me more than how you decide to dress your face!

Out of The Beauty Tool Box

This photo above is a glimpse of my setup when I am doing makeup. I am a complete product junkie, I dont use only one brand I use them ALL! Although I am a firm believer that quality cosmetics dont always have to deplete your savings I do suggest in investing on a few items that come second to none.

I love cosmetics that are multi functional so when I noticed Nars carries multi-purpose sticks that can be used as an eyeshadow, lipstick, blush or as a highlighter I was as inspired as any MUA is at the moment of a discovery. They run about $39 a piece and are highly valuable. This product is carried with me to ALL my shoots because I can use as much or as little as desired.

My favorite shades are Copacabana, Southbeach and Orgasm.

Use on the high cheekbone area for a dewy fresh look as well as on the body for a bit of pop, especially in photos! This product is worth the money and your results will leave you camera ready!

Blue eyebrows and beautiful middle eastern music

Mr. Saxobeat

This song has been on repeat for a while now. I heard it for the first time during our Labor Day BBQ and quickly wrote it down on a napkin to look up later. I usually need to hear lyrical music more than once before I can asses if I like it or not, but this song just hit me right where it counts! I love EVERYTHING about this song. I immediately thought of my Boston BFF, Nikki. When I saw the video it tripped me out on how similar their styles are too! I seriously had to look at her name to make sure it wasnt Nikki! Ah Nikki, the type of girl that knows how to use her feminine charm, has a sharp tongue and looks to seriously drive any person crazy!

Missing my girl like crazy, cant wait till we sit side by side cracking jokes and keeping the other on our toes!

Rich, how long have you been in the beauty field and do you find it hard to keep up with all the changing trends?

I have been in the beauty field for over 2 years. Prior to my beauty work I was a marketing associate for several fashion retailers and brands including Hot Topic, Torrid and Mighty Fine. Having worked in fashion for 9 years, my job was to know about emerging trends so keeping up with trends is second nature to me. Its all about being linked into pop culture and street trends.

Youre a double threat, you do both hair and makeup but is there one you prefer over the other?

It really depends on the day. I find creativity out of both artistic mediums

What is the one product in your makeup kit you cannot live without and why?

I would have to say my Makeup Forever HD Foundations. They are super smooth and light in texture and you can build on them without a 'cakey' look. Close second would be my beauty blender. Its a little pink sponge that I use to apply my foundation. It pushes the foundation in the skin, resulting in a flawless natural 'airbrushed' look.

Summer is almost over and Autumn is approaching, what style do you think will be a hit in the coming season?

DARK LIPS!!! Everyone must have a dark brown or burgundy lipstick for fall. MAC makes a shade called Film Noir that would work on a variety of skin tones. MUST. HAVE!!

What styles grab your attention the most? High sleek ponytail, wild luscious locks or long & romantic?

Im OBSESSED with the 70's glam look so I always lean towards BIG SEXY CURLS. However, a high ponytail is always appropriate.

What projects are you currently working on?

I have a 6 page spread in Runway Magazine, which will hit news stands in mid September. I also worked on Hairspray the musical at the legendary Hollywood Bowl. This was a very special project because I was given the chance to work with makeup geniuses like Anthony Gordon and Roshar. I also had the pleasure to work with super talented Corbin Bleau and funny man Michael McDonald.

Many artist have a signature style, explain yours.

I am known for perfecting the skin and accentuating facial features. In into creating natural looking skin that looks healthy and flawless! Skin is the canvas to every makeup application

Who is your idea of beauty and why?

My idea of beauty is Humanity. There is nothing more attractive than a gentle soul and selfless mind

Time

6:21.."born free..."

Late nights, early mornings, however you want to call it... some days Im up at 2-3-4 a.m. I put on makeup, I listen to relaxing music, I look at the night sky. I think... a lot.
They say thinking is the talking of the soul with itself. I enjoy that thought....

Alaina Huffman

Alaina Huffman aka Black Canary from Smallville and Tamara Johansen from Star Gate Universe had an appointment with me to go darker. Yup, its that time of year where we switch our golden locks for something more seasonally cohesive, reds!

I am a huge fan of redheads, I love all shades of red. Some of us can easily transition from color to color depending on skin tone and eye color.

Alaina is the perfect candidate of any hair color. She has the right amount of warmth in her skin and her eyes are an amazing color of gray that actually seem to have a reaction to what shes wearing, talk about getting into character!

She is a natural ash blonde but had heavy highlights and a few honey low lights. Her hair is porous and didnt have any pigment so we mixed up a natural base
with some pretty reds and got our result.

After we did her hair I quickly applied some eye makeup and lipgloss. Shes beautiful, isnt she?

So happy and honored to have worked on her. I look forward to even going a little darker with her hair!! Lets see!

So if you are interested in coloring your hair a shade of red or are planning on going darker from light hair, remember your hair will hold the color better after the second or third time applying the color. Why? Because lightening hair strips the pigment out. Your hair cuticle is open so color cant stay in as long as it would had you not lightened.

Try going a shade darker than your target shade so when it does wash out it washes out to the color you originally planned on.

Seasons are changing, your hair color should too! Its fun, try a new color out, it will change your whole look.
